Summary
An over-reliance on a simplistic rendering of secularization theory has led many students of International Relations to minimize the role that religion plays in contemporary global politics. A turn to the examination of “worldviews,” however, is a welcome opportunity to remind ourselves of the enduring claim that religion has on how modern individuals and communities continue to understand systems of order, and the relationship between human existence and what is really real. Religion and politics are two foundational aspects of human life and community that relate to each other as mutually constitutive elements of coherent – if often politically problematic – worldviews.

Summary
MESSENGER’s exploration of Mercury has revealed a rich and dynamic geological history and provided constraints on the processes that control the planet’s internal evolution. That history includes resurfacing by impacts and volcanism prior to the end of the late heavy bombardment and a subsequent rapid waning of effusive volcanism. MESSENGER also revealed a global distribution of thrust faults that collectively accommodated a decrease in Mercury’s radius far greater than thought before the mission. Measurements of elemental abundances on Mercury’s surface indicate the planet is strongly chemically reduced, helping to characterize the composition and manner of crystallization of the metallic core. The discovery of a northward offset of the weak, axially aligned internal magnetic field, and of crustal magnetization in the planet’s ancient crust, places new limits on the history of the core dynamo and the entire interior. Models of Mercury’s thermochemical evolution subject to these observational constraints indicate that mantle convection may persist to the present but has been incapable of significantly homogenizing the mantle. These models also indicate that Mercury’s dynamo generation is influenced by both a static layer at the top of the core and convective motions within the core driven by compositional buoyancy.

Enlargement of the European Union (EU) is infusing renewed religious vitality into European political and social life through the influential role that religion plays in many of the states that have recently joined or are seeking to join the EU as full-fledged members. This vitality is, in turn, fortifying the role of religion in European politics in two closely related ways. In the first place, the close ties between religious tradition and national identity that new member-states and candidate-states are introducing to the EU hold the very real potential of reviving political recognition of the Christian, and specifically Catholic, roots of European integration. Western Europe may be said to have preserved Christianity only as glimmering embers that are not able to generate much heat, on their own. But when fanned, in very different ways, by Catholic Poland, Orthodox Serbia, or Islamic Turkey, those embers are much more likely to flicker back into flames. Second, the greater attention to religious difference that this renewed vitality implies could itself ignite political reactions and conflicts that are likely to impede the process of “Europeanization.” Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and Islam are transnational religious traditions that each have their own understanding of European identity, European unity, and even of European modernity. These religious understandings and definitions, animated politically in complex ways in places like Warsaw, Belgrade, and Ankara, may not be consistent with how these concepts are defined and understood in, say, Paris, Berlin, or Brussels. As these religious traditions, and the national communities partly defined by them, are drawn more deeply into the project of European integration through enlargement, religion will also get drawn more deeply into European public life. Put another way, religion, widely presumed to have been consigned to the political margins in Europe, is now poised to play an important role in one of the most central political processes of contemporary European life.
Timothy A. Byrnes is Professor of Political Science at Colgate University (Tbyrnes@mail.colgate.edu). His books include Transnational Catholicism in Postcommunist Europe, and Catholic Bishops in American Politics. Peter J. Katzenstein is the Walter S. Carpenter, Jr. Professor of International Studies at Cornell University (pjk2@cornell.edu). His current research centers on issues of regionalism as well as soft power in world politics. This paper draws on the arguments that we are developing in greater detail in the two framing chapters in Byrnes and Katzenstein (2006). We would like to thank all the participants in the Mellon-Sawyer seminar “Towards a Transitional and Transcultural Europe” where these ideas took their initial shape, as well as the participants at a workshop at Colgate University in April 2004. Robert Keohane, John Meyer, Vjekoslav Perica, Sabrina Petra Ramet, Sidney Tarrow, and Scott Thomas also offered insightful comments that helped us greatly in drafting this paper, as did two anonymous reviewers of this journal. The remaining weaknesses are due to our stubbornness in not following the good advice we received.

With political controversies raging over issues such as the wearing of headscarves in schools and the mention of Christianity in the European Constitution, religious issues are of growing importance in European politics. In this volume, Byrnes and Katzenstein analyze the effect that enlargement to countries with different and stronger religious traditions may have on the EU as a whole, and in particular on its homogeneity and assumed secular nature. Looking through the lens of the transnational religious communities of Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Islam, they argue that religious factors are stumbling blocks rather than stepping stones toward the further integration of Europe. All three religious traditions are advancing notions of European identity and European union that differ substantially from how the European integration process is generally understood by political leaders and scholars. This volume makes an important addition to the fields of European politics, political sociology, and the sociology of religion.

Summary
We developed the core ideas that inform this book in the fall semester of 2003 when we convened a seminar at Cornell University on “Fracturing an Integrating Europe from the Periphery? Religious Communities and Europeanization.” These sessions were part of Cornell's Mellon-Sawyer Seminar, “Toward a Transnational and Transcultural Europe,” which was sponsored by the Institute for European Studies at Cornell's Center for International Studies. We thank the Mellon Foundation, the Institute for European Studies, and the Carpenter Chair at Cornell University for the financial and logistical support of the seminar. And we thank the other members of the steering group of the seminar – Dominic Boyer, David Brown, Davydd Greenwood, and Sidney Tarrow – for their guidance and support.
A workshop hosted by Colgate University in April 2004 provided the venue for converting the conceptual and substantive discussions of our Mellon seminar into draft papers. We thank Colgate University's Center for Ethics and World Societies for the financial support that made this meeting possible. Substantial, subsequent revisions of these papers yielded a manuscript that received careful scrutiny by two anonymous readers of Cambridge University Press. We are grateful for their expert criticisms and suggestions that guided the final round of author revisions.
We would like to thank all of our authors for putting up with good humor what to them undoubtedly appeared like a never-ending cascade of email requests by their two editors imposing deadlines, suggesting changes, circulating and re-circulating drafts.
